Texas Hill Country Getaway 2

Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort

Nestled in the Texas Hill Country, northwest of San Antonio, is a perfect place for a golfing weekend getaway at one of the best Hill Country Resorts – Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort. Traveling on the winding road through the hills to the resort from Boerne and Interstate 10, you appreciate the magnificence and peacefulness of the Hill Country. When you coast down the last hill you’ll spot the sparkling lake on the right spilling over the road and into a lake on the left, the towering limestone cliff with a huge beautiful home sitting on top, the Tapatio Springs sign with a waterfall, the lush green fairways of the golf course, and some of tallest hills in Texas dotted with nice homes, you’ll get a sense that you are in for a special treat.

The resort sits in a valley surrounded by rolling hills and incorporates the best that Mother Nature has to offer including a variety of trees, wildflowers, axis and whitetail deer, rolling tree lined hills with deep valleys, limestone cliffs rising out of springs and lakes, and panoramic views from the towering cliffs. To be clear, they are only Texas hills but they are some of the tallest in the area and rise to 1900 feet. Plus you get to enjoy consistently perfect weather with an average annual high of 68 degrees which creates excellent conditions for year round golf and other activities. During the summer, the higher elevation is an average of 12 degrees cooler than San Antonio. Perfect for being outside.

The resort has a variety of accommodations for guests including suites and hill country guest rooms. Each guest room is larger than the typical hotel room and has a flat screen TV, seating area and desk, coffee maker, hair dryer and iron, and upgraded bath amenities including two sinks and lots of counter space. Best of all each room has a very comfortable king or double queen bed and either a private balcony or patio – an excellent spot to relax with a morning cup of coffee and enjoy the view of the golf course, deer, beautiful hills, or take in a spectacular Hill Country sunrise or sunset.

One of the primary reasons to keep coming back to Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort is to play golf on 18 of the best holes in Texas. Each nine is unique and different and will test your accuracy and course management skills with a combination of tight landing zones, water features, elevation changes, forced carries, and challenging doglegs. But don’t let that scare you away – the course is fair and there are four sets of tee boxes plus a combo on the scorecard. Not only is the layout challenging but it is very scenic with rolling hills, waterfalls, colorful flowers, sparkling ponds, beautiful homes scattered along the hillsides, and towering trees. The front nine plays through the valley with water coming into play on six holes and it’s a enjoyable par 35. The back nine plays up and along the ridge line of the rolling hills and then back to the valley. This nine is a blast to play with elevation changes, doglegs, forced carries, and some fun holes.

After, or even before, 18 holes of golf I’m ready to eat and The La Cascada Restaurant which adjoins the pro shop is perfect with it’s spectacular views of the cliff-top mansions, golf course, a water fall, and lakes from the floor-to-ceiling windows. You can eat in the nicely appointed dining room, in the bar area, or on the really cool outdoor patio. On Friday and Saturday you can enjoy live music on the patio. La Cascada serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and a wide selection of choices plus Happy Hour and specialty drinks. We enjoyed just about everything from the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Literally waddling away from our completely cleared plates obviously impressed with the food.

After golfing, bike riding, and hiking most of us are ready for a spa treatment at Puresol Salt Cave & Spa which is in the center of the guest rooms and next to the pool and fitness center. Guests have the option to enjoy the likes of a “Deep Tissue Sports Massage” that “relieves aches and pains that are stored in the deepest part of the muscles” and/or select a HydraFacial Treatment (a new breakthrough in skin resurfacing technology) at Puresol Spa. I’m told by a reliable source that the facial is relaxing, soothing, and very refreshing.

We spent forty relaxing and refreshing minutes in the salt rock cave, what? Puresol Salt Cave Spa is the only spa in the country with an authentic, therapeutic salt cave where guests relax on a spa lounger while being surrounded by soothing music, and literally emerge not only more relaxed and tension-free, but healthier as well. I fell asleep during most of my forty minutes. After the salt rock cave I felt like a new man – relaxed, and ready to go for, well, another nap.

There is a lot to do at Tapatio Springs Resort and the weather is perfect most of the year and some of the amenities you can enjoy include: an adults pool with a waterfall, hot tub, and relaxing pool furniture, a fitness center loaded with fitness equipment, miles of hiking, and biking trails around lakes and creeks and up and down the hills with some stunning scenery, horseshoe pits and bean bag toss, fire rings for s’mores and the resort pool with a bar, more fire pits, cabanas, a kids slide, and comfortable pool furniture.

Tapatio Springs Resort can also schedule special events and activities like horseback riding, wine tasking, antique shopping, kayaking, tubing, or birding and more.

Speaking of horseback riding, we had an extraordinary adventure with a geniune gentleman cowboy. The four of us were privileged to have bronco buster retired Willie Stricker lead us through the hill country on his former through-bred race horses. They were well cared for and simply beautiful animals. As a true Texas legend, you know by the casual and confident drawl, Willie shared his Christian faith with us in a number of colorful stories from the past of his cowboy life. I highly recommend calling Willie and experiencing real Texas Hill Country hospitality on horseback in the rolling hills. You will not be disappointed, although you will need to pay attention and watch your lip. Call him on his cowboy flip-phone at 210-508-9349 and tell him Frisco Tim sez “howdy!”
