Summertime is a magical season. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood—sleepaway camp, family vacations and swimming until your fingers shriveled like prunes.

Flower Mound in July means Independence Fest! We take a look at what’s in store this year on Page XX. July is also the perfect month to host a barbecue, and we like the idea of channeling Uptown Farmhouse’s Garth Blackburn and his take on watermelon—refreshing!

And if you are lucky enough to get out on one of our area lakes this month, it might put you in the mood for a new boat. The folks at Slalom Shop in Lewisville share the latest Cobalt R5 Surf boat in our Driver’s Notebook, and we are in love.

By July 1, if you haven’t already, you may be experiencing pool envy—whether you want to update an older pool or are ready to “take the plunge” and put in a new one. In “Make a Splash,” the talented folks at Complete Landsculpture share some creative ideas that will suit any fancy and discuss the latest trends.

We also show you how to make your own bug repellant to help keep the bugs at bay while you are enjoying the outdoors  And, in “Frozen Fun,” we’ve got a few ideas on how to beat the heat without leaving your zip code. It might be time for a frozen treat crawl. (We want to support all our local shops, don’t we?)

We hope you take the opportunity to mix things up a little bit this summer and kick your schedule to the curb! There is a lot to explore in our own backyard.

Happy summer, Cross Timbers!
